A forum featuring journalism professionals told attendees that the newspaper industry was in need of a new business model but the need for news will remain.
Journalism professor, Dennis Jeffers kicked the discussion off on Tuesday moderating a forum that included several newspaper industry professionals discussing the future of journalism.
Laura Varon Brown of The Detroit Free Press considers the current model in which newspapers are being published as being broken and in need of a change. Money and sales are being lost to the free news being offered on the web and Brown seems to think that it is killing the business.
Mike MacClarin of the Michigan Press Association thinks it is an exciting time to be in the business but people in the industry need to find a way to start charging for the online news being made available.
“Years ago people used to go to a record store to buy music,” MacClarin told the audience, “there is a corollary of newspapers and music. How do you make money developing digital content?”
With most of the speakers sounding generally negative towards the way the industry is going it was Tony Dearing of Ann Arbor.com who shed a truly positive white light on the whole situation.
“The need and demand for what we do will not go away, in fact I think it’s greater,” said Dearing.
Dearing reminded the audience that none of the other professionals were strictly in the newspaper business but rather they were in the news business.
Lonnie Peppler-Moyer of Monroe News said that she was hiring at the moment, and every one of the professionals said that they were looking for a younger group of reporters to help run their web programs.

Working with developmentally disabled people is no easy task, something in which Joe Karle knows a lot about.
What Karle does is not something the weak of heart can do and it requires not only physical toughness but also mental toughness. It takes the kind of mental toughness that allows for someone getting paid $9 an hour for 40 hours a week to deal with someone like Josh.
Josh was one of the first residents Karle had to work with when he started at the St. Louis Center near Chelsea.
Josh, as Karle would describe it, had a habit of leaving when nobody was looking and when he didn’t get his way could get very violent.
“ I wanted to quit my first day because I go my butt kicked by Josh. But since I had my worst day the first day it could only go up,” said Karle.
Things eventually improved between Karle and Josh, Karle just had to figure out what Josh did and didn’t like.
Of course Karle probably knew the job was going to be a little physical when he was told he would have to be trained to take somebody down and restrain him or her. What Karle didn’t probably know was the physical toll it would have on his body.
Karle says he has scars on his back from being clawed and has had a contact knocked lose from being suckered punch. Lifting weights really comes in handy said Karle because the residents are strong.
But despite all the physical pain and suffering Karle endured he admits that the experience has been a positive one.
“It makes you examine how you look at not only autistic, but people in general, “ said Karle.
Karle said the experience has made him learn to listen and know what makes people tick.
The St. Louis Center is located outside of Detroit and according to its website is a non-profit organization operated by the Catholic organization the Servants of Charity and deals with people that have developmental disabilities.
Karle is a student at CMU with a political science major and journalism minor, he says he will probably enlist in the military after school, and hopefully later get his doctorate in foreign affairs.

Pre-finals week event gave students an opportunity to relax and play games themselves before heading off to the library to begin studying.
With a carnival like atmosphere, Gentle Friday was the scene of what can only be described as a mini-Main stage. Student groups such as fraternities and sororities where present offering recruitment information.
Maria Schoenherr, a sophomore from Auburn, was running the booth for her sorority Phi Sigma Sigma at the event. She said that recruitment was coming up and they were trying to let people know about their organization.
“ What were doing is not advertising the sorority, just to see if people are interested in going to recruit, “ said Schoenherr.
Along with the different groups there, there was also different activities and things going on. There was a DJ, bull riding and a bounce house to name a few.
Experienced airbrush tattoo artist Zak Simon of Grand Rapids was working a booth at the event. Simon said that there was a decent turnout for his event, and that this was his fifth year of doing airbrush tattoos.
Freshman Elizabeth Clementz of Holly, Mich a worker for SGA had been working at Gentle Friday.
Clementz said that the event was, “just a time for people to relax and come out before finals.”
One of the more exciting booths was for the Dagohir club, which had foam weapons and shields for people to fight each other with.
Founder of the club Ashley Bonem, a junior from Midland said the club was not affiliated with another Dagohir inspired organization Merrill Men at Arms.
Bonem also said “ I got involved with this through a boyfriend in high school. I have been playing for three years.”
Bonem later said that she came to school and people liked the game so she made it an RSO.

New CMU Interim President will continue programs already in motion at the University while searching for a more permanent replacement.

CMU Vice President of Government Relations, Kathy Wilbur will be assuming the role of Interim President on July 1 when Michael Rao steps down. Wilbur told an audience Tuesday that she plans to continue going forward with the plans Michael Rao has made.

Wilbur told the audience that she would continue fundraising for CMU, something that President Rao continues to do. She also said she supports Rao’s sustainability, or green, initiatives on campus and that everyone should do it despite a lack of interest in Lansing.

The medical school program will continue as expected under Wilbur, which came under some criticism on Tuesday by students and faculty. However, Wilbur told an audience that she felt it was the right thing to do at this time.

Wilbur told the crowd that in the past information about the medical school has not been as public as it should have been, but she hopes to correct that and apologized.

One thing she said was she wants to keep interest in CMU growing and prevent enrollment from going down.

When asked how to keep enrollment growing Wilbur said, “ The elimination of the CMU promise was tough I believed it helped with enrollment.”

She said that it might not be necessary to bring back the CMU promise but maybe something else. Wilbur said that one strategy might be better partnership with community colleges and more utilization of the deans and faculty.

Wilbur confirmed on Tuesday that as the search goes on for a more permanent president that she will stay on and be one of those candidates.

Wilbur, will be the first woman president at CMU and has recently been inducted into the Woman’s Michigan Hall of Fame. She has worked for the state in Lansing for 12 years and has been the head of three different departments.

She graduated from MSU with a bachelor of arts in journalism and a minor in political science.

Clinton working with Israel proposes Palestinian self-government, she proposes a seperate state. Israel Prime Minister, Nenyamin Bentanyahu has said he believes in self-goverance but has not voiced support for the seperate state issue.

Here is my problem, I believe Palestine deserves to be seperated from Israel, I agree with this decision and I support it. I believe Israel has every right to defend their country but I also believe Palestine has every right to want to fight the Israelis as well.

After reading books like Palestine by Joe Sacco and having friends who are Arabic I think I can grasp the situation over their a little bit better than most.

Israel took over a country after World War II, not on their own merits but instead was given it by foreign governments outside the Middle East. However, here lies the problem, upon receiving this land Israel has done nothing but terrorized the people of Palestine.

They have placed unfair trade restrictions on Palestinian goods, attempted to invade Lebanon on several occasions, and have been caught possibly using illegal munitions against Arabs.

Israel has unfairly committed crimes against people simply because they can. That is not to say that Palestine has not done its own fair share of injustices, but much of it seems to largely been in response to the conduct of Israel.

Any country has the right to defend themselves, but perhaps Israel a city-state should look at why an entire region of the world hates them and then look to correct that. A seperation of Israel and Palestine is the best possible solution for the two, yet Israel refuses.

Lives are being lost in Gaza why can’t people put territorial issues to rest and simply agree to this seperation.

Public Relations Manager of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, Frank Cloutier has big plans for expanding the tribe’s enterprise. With ideas and building projects that include: strip malls, clubs, theme restaurants, sports centers, grocery stores and even a hotel chain, Cloutier believes that the time is right to expand.

“Were on the cusp right now of going on a major expansion,” Cloutier said.

However, Cloutier made it clear that the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe is facing it’s own hardships as well and that people can see where the state of Michigan’s economy is at by observing the casinos. Cloutier said the project was supposed to take about 17 months but they managed to get it done in seven.
Looking to not only create new businesses for the tribe Cloutier has said that the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe has been purchasing smaller businesses as well that can be grown and developed.

For journalism students interested in studying abroad professor Elliott Parker has the solution they just may have been looking for, offering students the opportunity to study at the prestigious Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

According to Parker Nanyang Technological University ranks as one of the top 50 best universities in the world, it ranks somewhere between 38-48 Parker told a class of journalism students at Central Michigan University.

Not only do students get an opportunity to study at a elite university they also get a chance to travel all over Asia as well. With cheap plane fair a student can travel to nearby countries Thailand, India and Japan, and if they feel particularly interested can pay $200 to visit Australia.

Students who feel that they may be ‘lost in translation’ need not worry because Singapore has a very technologically advanced society and many of the people there speak English perhaps even better than the students themselves.

” If you want to be embarrassed go somewhere like Singapore where they learned English and you sort of picked it up and have someone correct it. ” Parker told the class

Chapter 3 Summary
The focus of chapter three was about who journalists write for; is it the company they work for or the citizens that read the material? Well, the conclusion of the chapter that is that a journalist is not writing for the company they work for but instead for the citizens that reads the paper. A journalist is suppose to remain accurate in they’re reporting and not attempt to be misleading. Essentially what this means is if someone has taken ad space out in the paper you work for you cannot write that person a favorable review simply because they have paid your paper money, they instead need to be deserving of that favorable review. Essentially it is the journalists honesty and duty to the citizen that earns the paper money, people will only read a paper if they feel the information they are being given can be trusted.

Chapter 4 Summary
Chapter four talks about the importance of verification and what it means. Essentially it is a journalist’s duty to be able to verify the facts that are present and to report truthfully and honestly. If a journalist is questioned about his facts it is important that they know where they got they’re facts and where to go get them at. A journalist is to become objective in they’re reporting as well eliminating all biases that may exist. Modern day journalists think this is next to impossible since everyone has their own individual biases. However, it is these biases that gave way to the idea of objectivity; it was a way to bring legitimacy to a paper and force journalists to be honest in their reporting.
